It has taken me a little over a month to finish this book and I was quite disappointed because I expected it to be quick read. First of all, I was under the impression that I was reading a romance novel and since I had planned to read only romance novels in the first two to three months of this year, I was highly traumatized with what this book threw at me. Please note – this is not a romance novel as it is been publicized and advertised, I feel like I was defrauded!
The story is told by mother and daughter, Morgan and Clara who seem to have normal lives until fate plunges them into a very dark place as Chris, husband and father , and Jenny, sister and aunt both die in a car crash. This singular event would change their lives forever as they try to navigate through the grief, their relationship and what their loved ones have left behind. It is an emotional rollercoaster that would keep you thinking about the story for a long time to come and probably make you always wonder what you would have done in their had you been in their shoes. To avoid spoilers, this is as far as I can go on the story line but I would conclude this part by saying it was good story.
However, It felt like I was reading a combination of an adult novel and a young adult novel. I am not a fan of the YA genre so after a short while I found Clara’s narration somewhat boring and a bit annoying. I wondered if I may have preferred the story if it had been told only by Morgan her mother or if Clara’s character was more likable but I can’t say. I also found the first ten chapters very intense and then the rest of the book which had 28 more chapters dragged on like forever and I got tired of waiting for the story to end.
This is my first Colleen Hoover book and I had high expectations due to very good reviews of her books but this one wasn’t a wow for me. I still recommend this book as it really has a good story but it was not for me and it was certainly the wrong time to read it.
