Book Review: The House on firefly Beach by Jenny Hale

Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture and the author Jenny Hale for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a quick and easy to read romance novel that can serve as a perfect escape. Sydney Flynn has moved back to Firefly Beach, a place she has always called ‘home’ divorced and jobless. She tries to start a new life with her son Robby while dealing with the changes around Firefly Beach and the effect these changes will have on her and her family’s shared memories. In the midst of all this, Nate Carr her old flame and nemesis shows up and complicates everything.

I enjoyed reading this story and Firefly Beach seemed like a beautiful place which made for interesting reading and imagination on my part. I liked all the characters but there was no one in particular I would say was special to me. Sydney’s feelings, concerns and fears were relatable and Nate’s actions I later came to understand at the end.

However, I felt certain parts of the story such as the issues around the house and reminiscing about Aunt Clara were overdone and this took the attention off the main characters. I found Sydney’s character a bit too melancholic and was constantly frustrated with her when she couldn’t just stay still and listen whenever Nate tried to explain himself. Their continuous ‘movement-in-circles’ took away the feel-good vibe I would usually expect to get from reading a romance novel. I also found the reconciliation at the end a bit rushed and this goes back to my first point of some minor parts of the story overshadowing the main story.

Nevertheless, it was still OK. If  you love romance and you are looking for a quick read, then this may be your book. I hope to check out more books from the author in the near future.
