I discovered Colleen Hoover earlier this year when I read her book ‘Regretting You‘ (See review HERE). Although I wasn’t too impressed with it for some particular reasons, I decided to give her another try and BOOM! I am sold out. She is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and may be my best discovery in 2020.
This book was everything and more. Colleen Hoover does it again with a very heavily themed, yet refreshing story about love, abuse, regret and redemption. Written in first person POV, the story straddles between two different times in the life of the protagonist where she recounts some events in her past and present life written in alternating chapters. This is a brutally honest view of the different faces love can wear and how it makes it extremely difficult to leave an abusive relationship. It is raw, emotional and realistic. I loved the fact that she made an author’s note at the end of the book which made all the elements in the story come together more clearly.
The heroine Lily, is an MVP. I admired her courage despite all odds to change her story for herself and her daughter. There are a few women who have travelled this path and didn’t come out alive so this story is the author’s way of encouraging women who find themselves in these situations to step up and step out.
I couldn’t stop reading/listening to this book. Despite it’s 385 pages, I was glued to it until it was over. I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers but take note that this is not your typical romance novel. This theme has definitely inspired a conversation which will be had on my podcast and I look forward to recording that episode.
