Book Review: Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

This is the fifth book I have read by the author this year and I still have quite a good number on my TBR. You can check out my reviews on all her other books by searching for “Colleen Hoover” in the search box on this page. The last three books were really great reads so I came into this book with very high expectations.

The story is focused around Sydney a college student who is studying music despite her parents objections. She lives with her best friend Tory and has been in a steady relationship with her boyfriend for two years. On the day of her 22nd birthday, she discovers the unthinkable and moves out of their shared apartment. Ridge on the other hand, is a song writer for his band who lives in the same apartment building with Sydney. He witnesses her heartbreak and offers her a place to stay in his apartment until she gets back on her feet. He also discovers that Sydney is a God send as she is really good at song writing and he is currently suffering from writers block. As they create music together, they realize they have a strong attraction to each other. However, Ridge has a girlfriend, the beautiful Maggie who he loves her with all his heart and Sydney doesn’t want to be the one to tear them apart.

I am not very good with romance stories that are based on infidelity of any kind. It is really a no-no for me. On that note, I found this story quite displeasing to say the least. Both protagonists were likable characters but their decisions made me change my mind about them. I actually contemplated leaving the book half finished but I completed it so as to decide if I would continue with the series or not and the verdict is no I will not be reading the other two books in this series. This book reminded me of her first book I read this year, ‘Regretting You’ which with hind sight was slightly better even when it still carried elements of the same theme  although the dynamics were different.

Nevertheless, typical of the author, the book was well written, the characters were believable and to be honest even if I didn’t like what the story seemed to encourage, It is a reality that happens all the time in relationships. My take-away from this story is how important it is to guard your heart when you are in any serious relationship especially marriage. This story reiterates how anyone is prone to infidelity if you are not deliberate in your actions and behaviors towards people we may be attracted to or if we do not consciously put boundaries in other relationships we have with people who are not our spouses or the person we are in an exclusive relationship with.

If you don’t mind reading romance based on infidelity and heartbreak then you will find this book a really good read. I will still go ahead to read more of the author’s books on my TBR but I think I will pay more attention to the reviews to avoid reading books with similar themes.
