Book Review: Baby By Me by Adesuwa Iluobe

Many thanks to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have read two books by the author and I had high expectations for this one.

‘Baby By Me’ is a modern retelling of the biblical story which features King David, Bathsheba and Uriah. For those who are not familiar with this story, King David say Bathsheba (Uriah’s wife) from his roof top and immediately coveted her. He sent for her and had his way with her. Disaster struck when she realized she was pregnant and all this while her husband Uriah was at the war front fighting at the command of the same king. King David went ahead to try to cover his tracks and this led to Uriah’s death. In this story, Amira, Bolu and Dare play out this same drama however, the story is set in 2020, Abuja Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before I started reading this book, I never read the blurb therefore it was a pleasant surprise to discover it was a retelling of one of my favorite bible stories. It started as a slow burn (mostly the first two chapters) and then “boom”! I was hooked. I love the way this story was retold, the characters and the fact that it was so relatable. I had to pause several times while reading this book to ponder on why each of the characters acted in the ways that they did. I was glad that the author was able to allow the reader to see each character’s perspective thus giving room for empathy instead of harsh judgement. I was also reminded that things such as holding on to pain and anger will only lead you down a dangerous path with consequences. This was an enjoyable read and I highly recommend to everyone especially lovers of Christian Fiction.
