Book Review: Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This is my first book by the author even though I have several books by her on my TBR. I can’t say why I decided to start with her latest book but I’m glad I did.

‘Malibu Rising’ is a multithemed story about family, fame, sacrifice, heartbreak, abandonment and love. Set in the 1980s with flashbacks from the 50s/60s, It follows Mick Riva the legendary singer, his rise to fame and his complicated life and relationships with his wife and children.

Reading this book is a reminder of why I love historical fiction so much. It was well written, fluid and captivating. The story was believable with unforgettable characters (the main characters) with Nina topping the list for me. There were also many lessons to learn here and the most important for me is how easy it is for history to repeat itself in our lives if we are not cautious and deliberate about what we want and do not want. It’s also highlights how at a young age, one can step up to the plate and take up responsibilities as Nina did for her mother and siblings. Most importantly, this story holds a reminder of what heart break can do to a person if you let it win and this can only happen if you decide that only one person can make you whole in this life. June Riva’s story is a picture of that and I hope women will read her story and always remember to focus on the things that matter; God, self and then anyone else he has put in your path. The only part of this story I felt was a bit too much was the party at Nina’s house which went on forever, featuring characters too numerous to keep track of. Besides that, it was a fantastic read and I highly recommend. I will definitely now read this authors’ other books especially ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ I have kept for so long.
