I decided to read this book based on the reviews I read although I always cautiously approach Colleen Hoover’s books because I either love them a lot or don’t like them at all.
‘Ugly Love’ is a story told by the two protagonists Miles and Tate. It alternates between two different times, current day and 6 years earlier.
6 years earlier, Miles meets the love of his life Rachel but almost immediately realize they can not be together as their love will be frowned upon as “forbidden” if they decide to pursue a relationship together. They both damn the consequences and go ahead with their relationship but fate doesn’t allow things go the way they hoped it would.
6 years after, Miles meets Tate, his friend’s sister and they are extremely attracted to each other. However, Miles’ past is standing in the way of anything good coming out of this magnetic force. This is a story about first love, loss, grief and letting go of the past.
I loved the premise of this story even though things only got clearer towards the end of the book. However, there was something about Miles’ character that didn’t really sit well with me. I understand or I think I understand how difficult it would be to loose your mother as a teenage boy and have your father move on from it while you were still grieving and somewhat lost. I believe this and more contributed to the person he grew up to become but it still didn’t excuse the fact that he felt he could dish out rules as to how he wanted his relationship to be with Tate. Tate on the other hand was ready to take whatever Miles was handing to her and there seemed to be no indication from her past why she would allow him to get away with treating her in the manner that he did. I also felt that the author stretched this story a bit too much especially with regards to the back story and it got to the point where I was tired of waiting for the “AHA” moment.
It was an okay story but not great. I would still recommend it because I know some of you will actually love it much better than I did. As always, I would definitely still read books by this author.
