This is the author’s debut; therefore, I went into reading this book with zero expectations.
However, I was pleasantly surprised immediately after I started reading. The story follows Eve, a Nigerian-British woman who has been blind-sided by her husband as she discovers him after he has committed suicide. We join Eve on her journey through the pain, guilt, and confusion that comes with it all. Other themes in this book include interracial relationship/marriages, relationships with in-laws, and healing. Written in first person POV, the story carries a very authentic voice, and I could feel every emotion the character was experiencing. However, the author also did well to lace this story with a lot of wit and despite the heavy themes as I found myself chuckling quite a number of times throughout the read. The other characters were also colorful and memorable especially Eve’s family and best friend who reminded me of how important a supportive family and friends can be.
For a debut, this was a really good one and I hope to read more books by the author. I would highly recommend this book but if you are triggered by books with themes such as suicide and grief, I advise you approach it with caution.
