5 Quick Tips To Get You Reading More Books!

Quite a number of people have asked me how I manage to read so many books. In these days of fast cars, fast foods and fast lives, it is not strange that people don’t seem to find the time to read as many books as they would love to.

Here are 5 tips that help me read many  books each month, more than the average person even though I still hold down a day job.

1. Decide what type of books interest you: I love historical and Christian fiction so they are my first go-to books. I also have particular authors whom I love their work because in my own opinion, they write very well. This does not mean that I don’t read other genres but sticking to my preferred genre and authors increases the possibility of me reading more books. What kind of books do you like? Fiction? Non-fiction? When you know, then, stick to it.

2. Always carry a book along: I always have the book I am reading in my bag or car. During the day, there always seems to be some free time that can be conveniently filled in with reading your book e.g when commuting to and from work (If you are not driving of course), at the airport or on the plane while traveling, while waiting to pick up your kid from practice or even waiting for a meeting to start.

3. Try listening to audio books: Audio books are my new thing and they have worked so well for me. All you need is an audio book App on your phone and you are in business. I actually started listening to audio books to improve on my personal listening skills but I have fallen in love with the experience and I am always eager to put my eye phones on. Try this and you would read about a 100 books in a year and I am not kidding.

4. Don’t hesitate to abandon a book: This is something I have to tell  myself to remember  all the time. I am usually caught up in this web of trying hard to finish a book that is not just that good enough mainly because it has been hyped so much and I am hoping that If I continue, I will get to the interesting part soon or when I am trying out a new author and I want to be justified that I didn’t give up too quickly. The truth is, it’s a huge waste of time. We have to accept that everything can not be appealing to us. You will love some and hate some, so if that’s the case, let’s not sweat it. If you give a book three or four chapters and you are still struggling, then you are free to call it a day!

5. Commit to a time for reading every day: Reading at the end of my day is usually a way for me to relax and float into another world. Setting out about 30-45 minutes before you go to bed everyday or every other day will get you through most average sized books in about two weeks and two books a month for a busy bee is not bad at all. Committing to this may mean cutting out some TV time and definitely wasted time on social media but in the end you will gain much more.

Practicing these 5 tips have helped me a lot in my journey to read more and I know it will do the same for you. Just commit to it!

Happy Reading…
